Day One Skills

During Perdi Welsh’s two year fellowship with LIVE, she worked on the production of the BVetMed Day One Skills Handbook.  This handbook has been produced to identify the behaviour, attitudes and skills that are expected of every RVC veterinary student by the time of graduation. 

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) and Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) list of “day one skills” identifies the basic competences required of a new graduate and is the key benchmark that affects the approval of veterinary degree courses in the UK.  The College realised that many students were unclear about the range and level of competency required of a new veterinary practitioner.  Students seem to have had difficulties interpreting the RCVS and QAA skills and up until now, there were no clear competency objectives for the clinical years of the BVetMed programme.

Perdi Welsh worked with module leaders and lecturers to examine the RCVS and QAA documents, to further breakdown the competencies into their associated skill elements.

The BVetMed Day One Skills Handbook provides the framework for the College to continue to develop appropriate and effective learning opportunities for students to become proficient in day one skills.
