Vet Education Journal Club

The LIVE centre hosts a monthly Journal Club designed to promote discussion in the field of educational research. Our first meeting took place in January 2007; it was hosted by Ayona Silva-Fletcher (founder) and was attended by LIVE staff members. The Journal Club, however, quickly became integrated into the RVC and is now considered to be a primary educational resource across the college. Past meetings have included focal papers within the broad topics of Educational Theory, Assessment Methods and Learning Styles.

Next meeting:

The next meeting will take place in March, time and date to be confirmed.

Topic:

The current topic is Workplace Learning. This is very important in regard to veterinary education as extramural studies (EMS) take up a significant amount of time in the latter part of the curriculum. The RVC also has interns (for example ORBIS) who are learning within the RVC as their workplace. These studies offer students the chance to direct their own learning. Self assessment and reflection were addressed in the first of our Workplace Learning sessions lead by Ayona Silva-Fletcher on the paper ‘How Can I Know What I Don’t Know? Poor Self Assessment in a Well-Defined Domain’ by Eva et al., 2004.
