Motivating Factors for - and Barriers to - Participation in Continuing Professional Development

The LIVE Centre was awarded miniproject funding in October 2007 by the Higher Education Academy Subject Centre for Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine, to explore motivating factors for practitioners’ engagement in Continuing Professional Development (CPD), and barriers to participation. This work was carried out by Vicki Dale, Stephanie Pierce (now at the University of Cambridge) and Stephen May.

A questionnaire was distributed to a random sample of 2000 veterinary surgeons in the UK, representative of graduates from six of the seven veterinary schools from the last four decades. The questionnaire was designed to capture practitioners’ views about - and experiences of - CPD. In addition, the questionnaire incorporated an inventory to investigate the relationship between attitudes to CPD (motivating factors and perceived barriers) with practitioners' conceptions of knowledge, need for cognition and approach to study.
