Network Of Veterinary ICt in Education (NOVICE) Project

Last updated May 2011
What is the NOVICE Project?
The Network Of Veterinary ICt in Education (NOVICE) project is being carried out by five EU Veterinary Schools;
- Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University, The Netherlands
- Stiftung Tierärztliche Hochschule, Hannover, Germany
- The Royal Veterinary College, London, UK
- Szent István Egyetem, Budapest, Hungary
- Facultatea De Medicina Veterinara, Bucharest, Romania
This project, funded by an award granted under the EU’s Lifelong Learning Programme, aims to investigate the role of Web 2.0 technologies (for example, wikis and blogs) in supporting veterinary informal, lifelong learning. Specifically, the project seeks to develop a strong network of veterinary students and practitioners throughout Europe, supported by ICT and veterinary educationalists.
The project’s website www.noviceproject.eu has now been running for a year and has over 500 members from more than 30 countries. The website facilitates discussion and the exchange of knowledge between members from different countries and with different levels and areas of expertise; but all with common interests. Current popular groups include ‘Veterinary Students’, ‘Summer School 2011 in Budapest’, ‘NOVICE: ICT education’ and Vet2011’, and there are many more! Alternatively follow the blog of the resident veterinary or ICT educationalists.

The website offers advice and guidance to those new to the technology in the form of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) sections, help sections and the chance to e-mail ICT experts. So even if you have never used Web 2.0 tools before, you can feel confident to do so within NOVICE. To become a member, you need to visit www.noviceproject.eu and register, which is free of charge. You will then have to be approved by the NOVICE team before you can begin to edit your profile, write a blog, read the discussion boards etc. This process aims to ensure that the site is restricted to veterinary students, veterinarians, veterinary educationalists and ICT educationalists.

The NOVICE Summer School *NEW*
On 25-26th August 2011, NOVICE will be hosting a summer school at Szent István Egyetem - Budapest's veterinary school. The program will include keynote talks from veterinary and ICT experts, as well as workshops designed for a mix of veterinarians, veterinary students, veterinary educationalists and ICT educationalists. All four groups are therefore welcome to attend the summer school. There will also be a Twitter rally through Budapest so that you can explore some of Hungary, while learning about ICT/Web 2.0 technologies in a veterinary context! Registration is free! Visit the summer school page on the NOVICE website to find out more.
