Dr Sarah Baillie has recently been awarded the Times Higher Education's Most Innovative Teacher of the Year 2009 for her work with haptic simulators. Over 80 university teachers from around the UK were entered for the award. More information is available on the ViEW website, the RVC news page and in the awards article and on YouTube (7min 50s into the clip)
Biography: Sarah graduated from Bristol University in 1986 with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science and an intercalated degree in Anatomical Science. She worked in mixed practice in the Cotswolds where her main interest was dairy herd health and she gained an RCVS Certificate in Cattle Health and Production (1992). After moving to central Scotland in 1994, she changed to doing mostly small animal work. She continued to work in practice until starting at LIVE in 2006. In 2001, Sarah did an MSc in computing science at Glasgow University and then a PhD (2003–2006) developing and validating the Haptic Cow: a virtual reality (VR) simulator used in veterinary training.
Sarah’s research interests include:
-
Haptic (touch) computer simulators to teach veterinary procedures including: bovine fertility examinations, equine colic, small animal abdominal palpation, and more...
- Psychophysics - investigating performance for palpation-based skills using haptic technology
- Role-play exercises e.g. the Simulated Fertility Visit using the Haptic Cow in clinical training
- Haptic games for teaching manual skills
- Peer assisted learning (PAL)
- Assessment in veterinary medicine
- Professionalism (interprofessional learning, EMS, business skills)
